How Can I Optimize My Website For Search Engines?

Without search engines, your website cannot show in search results. Because the internet is constantly changing and evolving, it can be difficult to keep up with how search engines rank websites. While it may be difficult, optimizing a website that search engines will love is not impossible!

The Basics

Crawling & Indexing

Before you can optimize your website, there is some legwork you have to do. First, your website needs to be listed on the web. Check to see if each of your pages have been crawled by search engines and indexed. To check if a site or page is indexed, perform a site: search.

If your website does not look like it has been indexed, do not panic! There are a number of reasons that your website may not be listed. Brand new websites and pages do not show up on the web right away. It will take some time for search engines to crawl and index.

Content

Search engines are programmed to discover, read, and organize content in order to offer relevant results to users. Your content must prove helpful to searchers. It is important to evaluate the goals of your business and create your content around this. What do you want users to be searching for? There are 3 types of searches made by users.

  • Informational: Users are looking for information. If your website is informative, users are more likely to visit your website because their question about a certain topic will be answered.
      • Example: “What is SEO?”
  • Navigational: Users are looking for your specific website. They know the name of the website or company they would like to find.
      • Example: “Ambidextrous Services”
  • Transactional: Users are looking to buy something, whether that be a specific product or a service performed by a company. These searches are typically broad term and generalized.
    • Example: “Web Design Service”, “Online Marketing Service”

Ideally, you want your website to show up for all 3 search types. Providing content that answers search queries and provides helpful information will draw search engines in.

How Do Search Engines Rank Pages?

Search engines rank urls and pages from most relevant to least relevant to a query. It uses algorithms to retrieve, store, and order information in a meaningful way. These algorithms are constantly changing to improve the quality of search results.

When you provide useful answers to a searcher’s questions, the search engine is more likely to rank you higher in results. SEO should be optimized for user engagement and convenience.

Ranking For Certain Keyword Terms

If you want to rank for a specific keyword or phrase, you might want to delve into keyword research. For SEO to perform successfully, it must be optimized for the user searching for this term.

Put yourself in the user’s shoes. Ask yourself what types of services or products people are searching for or why potential customers are seeking that service or product. What would you type in a search box to find your information? Use those words in the content that you write. Determine how you can help provide the best possible content to satisfy the searcher’s questions.

Quality Over Quantity: Keyword Stuffing

You may choose to insert your keyword term or phrase a bunch of times onto your page in order to draw the search engine’s attention. This is what is called keyword stuffing. This is not what search engines are looking for!

Make sure you write accurate and clear content that describes your website, services, or other items you may be displaying on your website.
